About Us
The American Camellia Society celebrated its 55th Anniversary in 2000. The society was founded in Macon, Georgia, following a conceptual meeting the previous year in Savannah, Georgia. From a humble start with headquarters in a two-room laboratory on the University Campus at Gainesville, Florida, the society moved to donated space at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station at Tifton, Georgia. In 1968, through a generous gift of 160 acres by the late Dr. Dave Strother, the Society moved to the location it now occupies, at Massee Lane Gardens in Fort Valley, Georgia.

Since
1968, gifts to the Society have made possible a headquarters building,
a library filled with the finest collection of camellia literature
in the world, a residence for the garden's horticulturist, a large
landscaped greenhouse, a small research greenhouse, the Scheibert
Rose Garden, the Abendroth Japanese Garden, the Helen Teeter Garden,
the Stevens-Taylor Gallery, the Annabelle Lundy Fetterman Museum
and Educational Building, the Brown & Hall Environment Garden,
and a fine porcelain collection which includes the nation's largest
collection of Boehm porcelains open to the public.
Of
particular note is the fact that the greater part of the assets
of the Society have come from within the membership. There is
not now, and never has been, debt of any kind. We
can take justifiable pride in the strides of the Society during
its first years, and we look forward to continuing our progress. |

| Our
Goals |
|
Increase
Camellia Collection
At the present time, approximately nine acres of the
160 acre property are planted in camellias, the Queen
of the Garden. In addition to this outdoor planting,
a large landscaped greenhouse houses the more tender
camellias. This ensures that visitors will always
see blooming camellias during the season in spite
of inclimate weather. Future plans are to increase
the camellia plantings to make Massee Lane Gardens
the most complete collection of camellias in the United
States, including the hybrids and many species of
camellias.
Increase Visual Garden
Beauty
Many flowering trees and
seasonal plants are currently in the garden. An outstanding
daffodil collection of named varieties has been added.
Both deciduous and evergreen azaleas will continue
to be added to the garden, giving an extended season
of vibrant colors in the spring. The perennial bed
will be formed into a much larger cutting garden which
will furnish flowers for social occasions. Camellias
will be planted between the Annabelle Lundy Fetterman
building and the state highway, giving a better approach
to the garden and an excellent view from the highway. |

Research Support
At present, ACS partially supports
several researchers who work on diseases and pests of the
camellia. With more financial support, ACS expects to increase
funding support for such troublesome problems as petal blight
and dieback research projects.
Exhibition
Greenhouse
As funds permit, a "show"
greenhouse will be built adjacent to the Fetterman building
complex to give visitors a more visual understanding of the
true grandeur of camellias.
Garden
Signage
An expanded garden guide and more
signage is to be added for our visitors' pleasure. A guide
for children will help them gain greater pleasure of the garden.
Self-Guided
Tours
The outstanding collection of porcelain
from many studios in the Stevens-Taylor Gallery and the Fetterman
Museum will be recorded for self-guided tours.
As
more and more visitors come to Massee Lane, we expect continued
growth of these beautiful gardens. |
